What is energy efficient glass? Also know as heat efficient glazing, it is referred to low emissivity glass that has a special coating designed to reduce heat loss through your windows. Low emissivity glass, known as Planibel A is a substanstial upgrade to the older style double glazed units as it further reduces heat escape and reflects the heat back into your room. Its thermal performance earns a grade 'A' rating as it improves the energy efficiency of your property and helps you to save on heating costs when combined with other thermic properties.
In the current climate of rising energy costs, the price to pay in heating your home is significantly higher. Once your house warms up, maintaining that optimum temperature should take little energy but with weak areas in your property, the heat escapes and you would need more fuel to increase the temperature back up. Windows and doors are weak areas and over time things have improved as double glazing and glazing manufacturers have upgraded their thermal properties.
Not all modern double glazing windows and doors are created equally or at the same grade. Each element of these uPVC or composite products play an important part in achieving a higher grade in efficiency. In constructing our products, we can customise according to your requirements, whether you want Argon gas, low emissivity glass, or to combine everything to excel in heat efficiency.
In energy efficient glass units that are filled with Argon gas, you will find that the dense gas insulates against noise. This is cheaper than and almost as good as having acoustic windows. There are other heavy and dense gases that work better in glass units, such as Xenon and Krypton but they come at a premium price.
With improved insulating properties, energy efficiency glass regulates the temperature between the 2 panes above the threshold that attracts moisture from the air. This reduces the chance of condensation forming on the glass, particularly in winter months. With less probability of condensation on the glass inside of the window unit, you likely to prevent water damage to your cill and window surrounding or have mould growing.
Energy efficient windows are great at reducing your energy consumption. These windows have excellent insulating properties so that you will not have to rely too much on your heating to warm your house once you achieve your optimum temperature. With lower energy consumption you are burning less fuel and doing your part in being eco-friendly.
Standard clear glazing allows more sunlight into your home, and do not effectively protect you from the dangers of UltraViolet (UV) rays. UV rays are known to damage wood, cloth, and furniture by fading their colours and surafces. Energy efficient glass are made with a special low emissivity coating that blocks or reduces UV rays. The coating, which is often referred to as Planibel A, can block up to 98% of the rays so that you will not see any fading or deterioration in your property.
Glass units with Low-E coating and filled wth Argon gas are more expensive than standard glazing units. The savings in energy costs over a period can recover the extra price you pay for the premium high performance options so it does become an advantage in the long term.
Due to the special low emissivity coating, there is a reduced light transmission and often you can notice a very slight tint on the glass compared to standard clear glass. The reduction is minor and levels vary according to each manufacturer. However, some people prefer the reduced glare that the glazing produces and see this as an advantage.
Between 2 glass panes of a double glazing unit are spacers to separate them in order to create a gap. These spacers are usually made of some type of metal. As metal is conductive, heat can be transferred from one pane to another rsulting in heat loss. Warm edge spacers reduce thermal conductivity as they are constructed using low conductive materials hence there is very little heat transfer. Due to this, warm edge spacers can increase the internal cavity temperature by over 50% which adds to the thermal performance of a heat efficient glass window.
Both Xenon and Krypton gases are denser gas than Argon, therefore have a better insulative performance. They are much more expensive than Argon and can become a pricey option when you have a lots windows to replace with these heavy gases. Xenon and Krpton are not as readily available as Argon, but we can add them on a special made to order basis.
Upon request, we can provide a specification sheet listing the properties of a glass unit including the U value. The U value is the industry indicator of how the well the product performs as an insulator. The lower the value the better it is insulated. The U value looks at thermal transmittance which is the rate of transfer of heat through the product divided by the difference in temperature across that unit or glazing. You can read more about the thermal transmittance at NBS.
It is not always needed to change your existing uPVC or timber windows if they are in a good condition. As long as there are no gaps in the seals and siliconed areas, no structural damage and large enough recess, you may be able to have our new high perfomance energy efficient glass units fitted. It is always advised that we physically check your existing windows to ensure that there no underlying issues.
Argon filled glazing last for at least 10 years depending on how well it is manufactured and hermetically sealed. Naturally, there is a very small percentage that is discharged over time, but Argon gas filled units usually last the lifetime of the window. Most manufacturers claim that in 25 years the gas is reduced by a marginal 5% which still leaves a decent thermal performance from the glass units.
